In STEM, Advent first graders have begun learning about rocks and the Earth. We began our journey looking at crystals and how they can form.
Each class was separated into four groups with three to four people in each group. They mixed salt with water and used fuzzy sticks for the crystals to grow upon. After setting them up, they placed them on the counter and I hid them from view. No peeking allowed! After a few days we were able to see a few crystals forming on the fuzzy sticks and the sides.
Then Spring Break happened and before we knew it there were some amazing crystal formations. The students were super excited when they saw the changes! They kept journals documenting the initial setup and then changes they observed each time. They used a hand len to get a closer look at the crystals. I loved watching their excitement! What an awesome experience!
