February has gotten off to a great start! Advent fifth graders visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on Friday the 3rd.  With our proximity to the museum, our students were able to walk to and from the school. During the field trip, they were able to see images and artifacts from the Civil Rights movement. This was a great way for them to make real life connections to the individuals that they have been studying about in Social Studies.  The students watched a video about the history of Birmingham and then completed a scavenger hunt. We were able to walk through Kelly Ingram Park.  This park has statues that depict the four girls from the 16th Street Church bombing, officers with attack dogs, and fire hoses. It was a very powerful field trip.

The Fifth Grade math team competed in the Hayden Math Tournament on February 4.  We had three students that placed in the top 10 in the individual section.  Woo Hoo! The combined Advent math team finished 3rd overall in this tournament.  Way to go Panthers!!!!

James Spann, Meteorologist for ABC 33/40 here in Birmingham, came for a visit this week.  The students were able to see all that goes into meteorology.  He did a great job showing the students what the different colors mean on a radar screen.  He discussed what causes a storm to be severe, how lightning is created, and what to do if you hear the tornado siren.  He also encouraged all families to get a weather radio to make sure that they are always prepared and safe.  The school gave him a cake, and was shown on the news that evening.
