How do we see our city?

Third grade students recently explored this idea by using iPads to document a walking field trip to the studio of a local artist. Birmingham artist, Kevin Irwin, had responded to an Advent third grade letter writing activity with an invitation to visit her downtown studio. I realized the trip would be the perfect opportunity to practice some basic photography skills.

Students walked through downtown Birmingham with their iPads in hand. They were accompanied by teachers, parents and our amazing CAP volunteers. As we made our way to our destination, students captured architectural details of buildings, noticed interesting spaces, and clicked their shutters on surprising elements that they saw along the way. Of course, there was a stop by the “It’s Nice to have you in Birmingham” sign.

The resulting images show Birmingham truly through the eyes of our students. Advent students are out and about for many school experiences because of the convenience of the school’s downtown location. This photo walk opportunity provided for close looking and true engagement with the familiar surroundings. How unique and exciting it was for these students!

I hope the experience encourages students to continuously observe beauty and interest in their world! Check out a slideshow of the students photos:
